1984 by George Orwell

★★★★☆ How about the past tense of “run” is “runned” and “drink” is “drinked”? And opposite of “Good” is “Ungood” and that of “Cold” is “Uncold”? I love it. How can I “unlove” it? 😜 This was what they were doing for the Newspeak language mentioned in the book 1984 by George Orwell. War is Peace Freedom is Slavery  Ignorance is Strength  I can find the above slogans throughout book. Of course, that is what the book is explains. You can find a note on the slogans here . 1984 is written around World War II time, warns about the totalitarianism . It is really scary to imagine a life in the totalitarianism society. George Orwell wonderfully captures it through his protagonist Winston Smith. After reading the book, I watched the movie version of it directed by Michael Anderson. It is a good film to watch after reading the book. I think it would be little hard to appreciate the movie without prior reading of the book as the movie sequences are little faster...

Wadjda

She is in her 20s and her smile, the smile, is the queen of smiles. The blossoming of it has more than just the physical perfection - something sparks in that smile that cannot be seen by everyone. Don't bother checking it, you neither have to believe me nor have to confirm it. It is too common that few believe in one thing and few others believe the exact opposite of it. Of course, there are things that we take without much disagreement. How about "Kids are too smart for the yester generations and their expressions are always cute". Do you agree? I had seen kids, age less than 10, in my school days too but I never appreciated them as mush as I do now. I am not sure whether it has to do anything with the age. I wonder how these kids are so smart. They can play mobile phone games better than you. They can tell you the route they visited recently. They can say about the favourite actor. They can spot the car model they like. They can tell you where their friend...

Neethaane En Ponvasantham

"Arivillatha oru loosu ponnunu nenichiya enna? Enna insult pannatha. You are insulting my intelligence. I know what I am capable of". This Nithya is what I believe, probably what you and I believe, is the typical girl of this era - very powerful, excessively energetic to go through so many hardships yet fragile, can emotionally be broken into pieces in no time. It is a mighty portrayal of that character. She is amazingly cute and a splendid performance . But the movie failed miserably. It shouldn't have missed the ingredients of a good movie - sadly it missed. It is not about the story. I think there are many movies that could have failed but somehow got the things right and succeeded. Do you remember this visually pleasing movie?  It is a normal story. Isn't? Many can play Karthick and many can play Jessie. But can someone do the miracles of A.R.Rahman? An attempt could easily take this movie unwatchable. Vinod sees Aisha and wishes her to be his wife, oh y...

For you, a thousand times over

There could be few but I am yet to hear about the movie which then become a book. It should be a tough job. Pictures speak louder than words and so once the picture is out, it is hard to make them into words. Words enjoy their supremacy when the image that they create doesn't exist or yet to be seen by the world, only the writer's mind sees it. The reverse too is chanllenging. Making a book into a successful movie is also not a easy job. The story is already known, scene by scene. The book writer enjoys creating the scene, the  environment, using words for few pages for every scene. But in the movie, it is almost always goes unmentioned, hardly a second to show the background of the scene. For example, A tea cup; a beautiful tea cup; a beautiful tea cup with hot tea; a beautiful white colour tea cup with red roses printed on them...; In the movie, you can see the teacup, no mention of it, it is upto to you to see the details. I watched the movie The Kite Runner   directe...

The Great Dictator - Charlie Chaplin

I was reading a Tamil book நான் நடிகன் ஆன கதை-சாà®°்லி சாப்ளின் (சுà®°ா, வ.உ.சி நூலகம்)  that I bought recently . I never thought Charlie Chaplin was a hero in real life. It was inspiring to read a book about him. I watched two of his movies "The Great Dictator" and "City Lights" after reading the book. Both of them are excellent. Kovil Pillai P.

Abiyum Naanum

I always believe that the Creator/creation of the world has the perfection in the design. The deepest 'nested ifs' of this design can never fail and nothing left for unexpected. Of course, though you can practice to be otherwise, either intentionally or unintentionally, I assume women are designed to have all the softer qualities and men to complement them. Adjusting with each other is the real challenge and I guess marriage provides the best of platforms for it. And that is why I believe the relation between husband and wife is the best of all relationships. In fact, I would say, married life is a battle between the two to adjust with each others' nature, apart from fulfilling the custom followed by the society. The real beauty of this battle is to have no loser. It is a failure of married life when one feels defeated. In retrospect, I am sure these cute silly battles would take part in gladdening the heart. To my belief, understanding and patience are the top two qual...

The fun time, movies list

Just to maintain a list of movies that I hear about, in this year 2011. Let me know if you have "must watch" unusual movies. I'll try to watch. 12 Angry Men

We were talking about good movies and one of my colleagues suggested me to watch 12 Angry Men. This movie was released in 1957. Yes, 1957. 50+ years movie and someone, at age 25, is suggesting it. I watched it and felt it is good. The jury has to give verdict whether the slum boy had murdered his father or not. The 12 men argue over the points, in a small room and THAT is this movie. I thought it would be boring. It would be very much predictable. Well, I was able to predict but the movie is very interesting. The black and white movie is one of the good movies I have seen. 12 Angry Men explores many techniques of consensus-building, and the difficulties encountered in the process, among a group of men whose range of personalities adds intensity and conflict. Apart from two of the jurors swapping names while leaving the courthouse, no names are used in the film: the defendant is referred to as "the boy" and the witnesses as the "old man" and "the lady across t...

Kamal's Golden Jubilee year

Ammavum neyae appavum neyae - This was on Aug 12, 1959 - celebrating the golden jubilee of this is the 'Ulaga Nayagan' Kamal Haasan. Velu Nayagan of Nayagan , Chappani from 16 Vayathinile , Apoorva Sagodharargal Appu , Vazhvey Maayam Raja , Krishnaswamy of Mahanadhi , Aalavandhan Nandu , Thenali, Indian, Avvai Shanmugi ... each character says about Kamal's commitment to his work. It is not difficult for anyone to do have done so much, if they could stay for this long in the industry. But I don't think anyone would have done this with such a dedication and willingness to learn every bit of whole cinema like Kamal. I am sure he will end up in a place where you will have no one else to compare with him. Though I don't prefer watching movies second time, there are exceptions like Manohara, Panneer Pushpangal, Batsha, Minnale . And this ANBE SIVAM ! Though it was the extraordinary performance by Madhavan which made the movie so pleasant, I like the movie very mu...
