It may mean the same whether he says "Honey, please don't touch it!" or she says "Stupid, take this". No matter how superior the language is, we still easily understand things beyond what the mere words could mean. Perhaps, part of this luxury is what results in our choice of words to address someone. Apart from official purposes, we don't use the real name of a person anywhere, not even the KG kids are using it. Are they? Apart from animal names and local language "special names", friend ( "Nanba" sounds sweeter than the English word) is one of the common words we use in our closed circles. Whether we accept or not we get assigned sisters through our friends, perhaps that is the natural reason for the "Machi" getting so popular in our school, college and later days. I am not sure how long we have been using the word "Ji" in our place but I am hearing it only in the last few years. It is very short, gender neutral
