Roadside Gods

If it is "Aadi", the fourth Tamil month - if you count from "Chitirai", the thing I associate with it is "Kool" - those old days are crystal clear like many other wonderful moments of school days.

The grandma story is: While Jamadhakni rishi, a devotee of Lord Shiva, was burnt, Renuka Devi - his wife also leaped upon the funeral pyre. Since the rain God, Varuna, drenched the fire with heavy rain, she was just burnt but alive. The people around there made her lay on a plantain leaf, neem leaves and gave her tender coconut, Kool - a porridge, butter milk, etc.

In fact, it works scientifically too. I mean, these food items are good for everyone in this month. "Aadi" begins with a season shift after the three hot months of summer. The season change creates a lot of 'heat' related diseases. The remedy for common disease like chickenpox, smallpox is the food consists of tender coconut...

It is Aadi 30 today (Aug 14, 2008) and it got two more days to go. One of the nicest things in this month is the colourful Gods standing near the road, made alive by the exquisitely decorated with 'serial light cutouts'. How artistically they do it with those little bamboo sticks!

Out of curiosity, I started counting them and amazed to find that there are 23 temples within about 10 kilometers. Some of them were small 'putthu's when I saw them last year. Now they are grown. The faster they grow the lesser the possibility of expanding the road between Pallikaranai and Medavakkam.

My Book Shelf - Year 2017

I find it difficult to get this reading order. And I guess it would be still harder to read them without changing the order. I may allow one or two new books to be included in this list, if required. Share book reviews and ratings with Kovil Pillai, and even join a book club on Goodreads.

The Power Game

Even if you count from the Homo sapiens time, it has been half a million years and from the caveman life to the one who attempts to control the universe, the progress is tremendous. A number of struggles that we have overcome are unimaginable. I am still not convinced whether all these are part of the Divine plan or the Nature adjusts (if at all something is required) itself to any change that takes place in it. As long as we believe in science, we can truly appreciate our power and the things we have achieved. The oldest of the power struggles can be the one between men and women. It is perhaps so subtle that we can’t even call it a power struggle. While we manage to fight against external things, this is something happening in our own race, and we haven’t had an answer yet. A coffee selling 10 times costlier than the price of it in a decade ago may mean the coffee price has been raised. But when you compare it with the price of everything, it is relatively the same. If you look ...
